In 2007, International IDEA’s Office in Armenia directed its efforts towards developing civic and electoral education (CEE) based on the Institute’s previous capacity-building work in the fields of elections.
International IDEA’s contribution is a pilot initiative. It includes the development of teaching resources (CEE Manual for teachers), as well as the training of a group of teachers. The project involves the cooperation between International IDEA Office and the National Institute of Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenia.
In December 2007, International IDEA will publish a CEE Manual in Armenian, which will be distributed to all the schools in Armenia. The manual will be used by civic education teachers and trainers.
From 19 November-19 December 2007, an official Training of Teachers course (ToT) will be held in Yerevan. 27 teachers and civic educators from various regions of Armenia will participate.
It is expected that the teachers and civic educators involved in the course will adopt the learning methodology in their everyday teaching and will become catalysts of civic and electoral education reform in Armenia.
Since independence 16 years ago, Armenia has faced the challenge of educating a generation of citizens to feel ownership of their country and engagement in the development of their democracy. International IDEA works together with the Armenian government to assist in this process.
