Workshop on civic and electoral education in Armenia

Posted: 2006-07-10

One of the important contributions of International IDEA in Armenia was the workshop on civic and electoral education organized during 26 June – 4 July, 2006 by International IDEA Office in Armenia.  The workshop brought together BRIDGE Armenia Core group members (including CEC Armenia and Public Administration academy of Armenia representatives), representatives of the CEC Armenia, BRIDGE facilitators in Armenia, as well as international experts of education and elections.  It aimed at development of a strategy and programme for long-term, sustainable civic and electoral education in Armenia.  The different concepts of civic education, electoral education and voter awareness were discussed and it was stressed that voter information/awareness campaigns can be sustainable only in case they are implemented in the framework of and complementary to wider civic education and electoral education strategy and project.  The problems and perspectives of civic and electoral education in Armenia were discussed and future steps worked out for International IDEA’s contribution in this area in 2006-07, strategies for cooperation with the relevant local institutions and international actors. The Workshop drafted also a paper on the concepts of Civic Education, Electoral Education and Voter Awareness.
