International IDEA has been operating in Armenia and the South Caucasus since 2002 and is now about to close the office in Yerevan and hand over to its partner - the non profit organization Resource Building Institute in Democracy, Governance and Elections (RBI).
Manual for civic and electoral education entitled Exploring Democracy, Governance and Elections
The final phase of International IDEA’s activity in Armenia focused largely on civic and electoral education. This included the development of a manual for teachers and the conduct of training session for teachers to equip them to take civic and electoral education forward.
In December 2007, International IDEA’s Armenia office, in partnership with the National Institute of Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of Armenia (NIE), published a manual for civic and electoral education entitled Exploring Democracy, Governance and Elections. The manual aims to familiarize students with the concepts of representative democracy, active citizenship and the electoral process. The NIE officially endorsed this manual as a teaching resource, recommended to all Armenian teachers.
From 19 November-19 December 2007 a related course was held by International IDEA in Yerevan for the Training of Teachers (ToT) on civic and electoral education. At the end of the training, all 27 participants were accredited with a special ‘ABRIDGE’ certificate (a variation of BRIDGE certification) which will allow them to provide instruction on the civic and electoral education manual as well as the civic education module of the BRIDGE Project itself.

After more than 6 years of contribution to the South Caucasus region, International IDEA will be handing over its responsibilities on 29 February 2008 to the non profit organization Resource Building Institute in Democracy, Governance and Elections (RBI). Founded by the International IDEA Armenia Office team, RBI remains a solid partner of International IDEA: the Institute is providing support to RBI as part of the global strategy in civic and electoral education, resource building and sustainable democracy building. RBI’s mandate is to contribute to sustainable state building and the strengthening of civil society; contributing to the development of resource material in the field of democracy, governance and elections; and build capacity in this field. RBI’s focus is both on Armenia specifically and, more generally at the South Caucasus-Eastern Europe regional level.
