Democracy in Development - Global consultations on the EU's role in democracy building (preliminary report) smaller
Democracy in Development - Global consultations on the EU's role in democracy building - will be launched at the European Development Day, 23 October

The annual European Development Days - jointly organized by the European Commission and the EU Presidency - will be held in Stockholm from 22-24 October 2009. This year International IDEA’s report on Democracy in Development – Global consultations on the EU’s role in democracy building will be officially launched and handed over to the Swedish EU Presidency.

On 23 October a plenary session will be held on the topic of Democracy in Development, moderated by International IDEA’s Secretary-General Vidar Helgesen, and including such panelists as Ms Thoraya Obaid, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Ms Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson, President of Liberia and Karel de Gucht, EU Commissioner for Development. Swedish Minister for International Development Cooperation, Ms Gunilla Carlsson, will introduce the proceedings.

The plenary will be followed by a seminar on inter-regional dialogue on democracy building, organized by International IDEA. The panelists for this roundtable are heads or high-level representatives of the major regional organizations in Africa, Europe, the Arab world, Latin America and the Caribbean, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Secretary-Generals Amre Moussa (League of Arab States) and José Miguel Insulza (Organization of American States) will be speaking, as well as Ms Margot Wallström, Vice-President of the European Commission.

They will discuss the implications of the policy recommendations contained in the report Democracy in Development – Global consultations on the EU’s role in democracy building. The report is the result of an initiative lead by International IDEA, sponsored by Sweden, aimed at producing a deeper understanding of how the EU can best assist democracy building efforts worldwide. The initiative builds on a series of consultations with the EU’s partner organizations in Africa, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Arab world to find out how they view the EU and how they think the current partnership can be improved.

Registration for participation in these events is open until 15 October 2009.
