Posted: 2005-09-20

More than 50 people examined Indonesian democracy efforts during a 20 Sept. seminar on “Indonesian Politics: 60 Years’ Journey toward Independence, Democracy, National Development, and Regional Autonomy”, held at IDEA headquarters in Stockholm. Organized by IDEA and the Embassy of Indonesia in Sweden, the seminar sought to increase the Swedish audience’s knowledge and interest in the Indonesian democratization process.

Ambassador Marie Sjölander, head of the Southeast Asia and Pacific division of the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, delivered the keynote address. Tanri Abeng, former Indonesian minister for state-owned enterprises, made a presentation on “Business Environment under the New Leadership in Indonesia”. Professor Iwan Jaya Aziz from Cornell University discussed “Institutional Constraints in Development and Decentralization Process: The Case of Indonesia”, and Andrew Ellis, head of IDEA’s Electoral Processes programme, spoke on “One Year After the Elections – is Democracy in Indonesia on Course?

Members of the Indonesian community in Stockholm, the Swedish government, and Stockholm-based civil society organizations attended the event.

As part of its work on the Indonesian democratization process, IDEA’s Jakarta project supports the establishment and development of the new Regional Representative Council.
