Together with Riksteatern, Sweden’s national touring theatre, and the UNDP, International IDEA blended policy-related discussions (Democracy Talkshow) important to the Swedish and international publics with cultural performances that highlight both the opportunities and challenges of democracy in an increasingly complex world.

Democracy for Development / Development for Democracy, New York, 12 September 2008:

Together with the United Nations Department of Political Affairs (UN-DPA) and Development Programme (UNDP), International IDEA co-organized a meeting to identify areas of policy for multilateral action in the current global context – especially by the UN – in the field of democracy promotion and support that would enhance sustainable development processes.

Launch of a joint Action plan for democracy, Addis Ababa, 12 September 2008:

International IDEA and the African Union launched a joint action plan for democracy in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on 12 September. This was the first step in the implementation of the African Union Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

Electoral processes and democracy building in the Arab region, new york, 15 september 2008:

On 15 September a panel discussion was held on the above theme, organized by the Permanent Observer Mission of International IDEA to the United Nations together with the Permanent Mission of Italy and the Permanent Mission of Qatar to the United Nations. The event saw the launch of the Arabic editions of the International IDEA Electoral System Design and Management Handbooks.
