Asia and the Pacific

The Asia and the Pacific region is a fast growing centre for world political and economic attention. Alongside the growing influence and economic strength of China, the region contains a hugely diverse range of societies. Long established democracies or countries in democratic transition are joined by countries where any road to functioning democracy and rule of law appears long and difficult.

Work Programme

Over the years, International IDEA has been involved in several countries in the region, and currently has a substantive country programme in Nepal. In 2009, IDEA decided to take a broader view across the region and launched a new programme marking a consolidation of IDEA’s work throughout Asia and the Pacific. Read more

The IDEA State of Local Democracy (SoLD) assessment methodology empowers citizens to assess their own democracy. It identifies steps needed to improve the quality of that democracy. Rufa took part in assessing the SoLD in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.
