Training politicians in Peru

Posted: 2008-09-01

International IDEA and Asociación Civil Transparencia have joined forces to organize two training programmes for political leaders in Peru: “Capacity Building to Strengthen Political Organizations” and “Women’s Participation and Leadership in Political Organizations”. These courses target members of the country’s political organizations and local leaders with a view to improve their knowledge on the role and responsibilities of political parties, and processes that support an increase in the number of women holding party leadership positions and elected office.

Both programmes have a modular structure that combines on-site courses with virtual support mechanisms that strengthen expertise through specialized reading, virtual forums for discussions on specific issues, and permanent communication with and among course participants.

The programmes will be carried out in four macro regions in the country, bringing together participants from all of Peru’s 24 departments. From 2008 up to mid-2009, courses will be given in the north, center, and east macro regions. The south macro region to be included from April 2009.

In June and July 2008, in a bid to ensure the participation of all political organizations in the country, the courses were widely publicized in the three areas where activities are planned to commence this year. These efforts elicited a highly positive response: 504 persons applied of whom 284 individuals from 13 national and 30 regional parties were selected.

To date, the first three modules of the programme have been completed in the cities of Lima and Tarapoto, with 182 persons taking part (54% women and 46% men), of whom 50% were young party members (under 35 years old). The Programme will continue through August 2009.
