Posted: 2007-03-12

Eighty regional political leaders and representatives from electoral bodies participated in a seminar on “Funding of politics in Central America, Panama and the Dominican Republic” in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, 1-2 March 2007.

Experts at the seminar addressed four topics: the current funding system in the region; access to mass media; regulatory bodies and sanctions regimes; and transparency and dissemination of information.

These discussions were followed by sessions in which political leaders expressed their points of view on the need for reform in each country.

The opening ceremony was attended by government authorities, diplomats from Honduras, and presided by Jorge Arturo Reina, Secretary of State of the Ministry of the Interior of Honduras.

The seminar was part of a regional project for strengthening political parties in Central America, Panama, and the Dominican Republic, jointly organized by International IDEA, the Inter-Amercian Development Bank (IDB), Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional (AECI), Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida), UK Department for International Development (DFID), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Institute for Multiparty Democracy (IMD).
