The workshop was organized by IDEA and the Political Science Department at Khartoum University. The workshop was attended by representatives of political parties, academics, experts and civil society representatives. Dr. Ibrahim Elbadawi from the World Bank presented a paper on “Democracy in the Arab World” which outlined some of the key challenges for sustainable democracy in the region. Dr. Atta Al-Battahani presented a paper on “Democracy in Sudan” highlighting the historical development of democracy in the country and the relation between democracy and development, democracy and Oil and Democracy and war. Dr. Al-Battahani highlighted the importance of all political parties role (both government and opposition) in moving the democratisation process forward.
