The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance was established as an international inter-governmental organization by fourteen founding Members at a conference held in Stockholm on the 27th of February 1995. The Institute was registered in accordance with Article 102 of the United Nations Charter and has observer status in the UN General Assembly since 2003.
The current statutes were adopted by the Council in January 2006 and entered into force as of November 2008.
