Mexico and International IDEA

Mexico joined International IDEA in 2003.

IDEA maintains an office in Mexico City, Mexico.

Mexico, a Mixed Member Proportional System for parliamentary elections and First Past the Post for presidential elections, collaborates closely with IDEA and provides funding to the overall work of the Institute.

A large part of IDEA’s funding comes from its member states “core contributions”, which finance the entire work programme of the Institute: Programme of Operations 2007-09. Each of IDEA’s member states is therefore involved and instrumental in IDEA’s work to promote democracy worldwide.

Highlights of International IDEA’s activities in relation to Mexico:

  • IDEA’s Mexico and Central America project aiming to increase political dialogue, promote reflection and debate on the changes needed to ensure governance, research political parties and further the reconciliation process in Guatemala and El Salvador.

In addition, Mexico has sponsored IDEA publications such as:

Ambassador Andrés Rozental, President of Mexican Council on International Affairs is currently serving as the Vice Chairperson of the IDEA Board of Directors.
