Mauritius and International IDEA

Mauritius joined International IDEA in 1999.

Mauritius, a Block Vote democracy cooperates closely with IDEA, and provides funding to the overall work of the Institute.

A large part of IDEA’s funding comes from its member states “core contributions”, which finance the entire work programme of the Institute: Programme of Operations 2007-09. Each of IDEA’s member states is therefore involved and instrumental in IDEA’s work to promote democracy worldwide.

Highlights of International IDEA’s activities in relation to Mauritius:

• Regional seminar on “Electoral Reform in Mauritius: Moving Towards an Inclusive Democracy” held in Port Louis, Mauritius in February 2006 attended by 100 participants from both political and civil society groups who discussed both the development of a new electoral system and the social vision that a new electoral system should promote with respect to inclusion of women and ethnic and religious minorities.
• The Implementation of Quotas: African Experiences, a report examining women’s political representation on the African continent, showing how quotas have contributed to increasing women’s access to political power.
• Mauritius: Country Report Based on Research and Dialogue with Political Parties, a report on the internal functioning, structure, external regulation and environment of political parties in Mauritius.

Mr Cassam Uteem, former President of the Republic of Mauritius, is currently a member of the IDEA Board of Directors.
