Germany and International IDEA

Germany joined International IDEA in 2002.

Germany, a Mixed Member Proportional System democracy, cooperates closely with IDEA and provides funding to the overall work of the Institute since.

A large part of IDEA’s funding comes from its member states “core contributions”, which finance the entire work programme of the Institute: Programme of Operations 2007-09. Each of IDEA’s member states is therefore involved and instrumental in IDEA’s work to promote democracy worldwide.

Highlights of International IDEA’s activities in relation to Germany:

  • Democracy in the Arab WorldDemocracy in the Arab World project, funded by the Government of Germany and Arab NGO Network for Development, aiming to contribute to democratic development and support political reform both regionally and nationally. The project culminated in a Synthesis Report: Democracy in the Arab World including the main findings of three cases studies undertaken in Egypt, Yemen and Jordan.
