Canada and International IDEA

Canada joined IDEA in 1997.

Canada, a First Past the Post democracy, has cooperated closely with IDEA since 1997 and provides funding to the overall work of the Institute.

A large part of IDEA’s funding comes from its member states “core contributions”, which finance the entire work programme of the Institute: Programme of Operations 2007-09. Each of IDEA’s member states is therefore involved and instrumental in IDEA’s work to promote democracy worldwide.

Highlights of International IDEA’s activities in relation to Canada:

• Worldwide launch of ACE: The Electoral Knowledge Network, a series of six informational products on election management brought together into one portal featuring authoritative information on nearly every aspect of elections.

• “Democracy, Conflict and Human Security – Pursuing Peace in the 21st Century”, an IDEA Handbook emphasizing the conflict management dimension of democracy building, generated through IDEA’s Democracy Building and Conflict Management  programme.
  
  
• “Handbook on Democratic Dialogue”, a new IDEA publication produced in partnership with IDEA, UNDP, OAS, and CIDA (Canada International Development Cooperation Agency), intended as an introduction and guidebook for the development of dialogue-oriented programmes in democracy assistance and conflict prevention.
