Barbados and International IDEA

Barbados is one of the founding members of International IDEA.

Barbados, a First Past the Post democracy, has worked with IDEA since it formation in 1995 and provides funding to the overall work of the Institute.

A large part IDEA’s funding comes from its member states “core contributions”, which finance the entire work programme of the Institute: Programme of Operations 2007-09. Each of IDEA’s member states is therefore involved and instrumental in IDEA’s work to promote democracy worldwide.

Highlights of International IDEA’s activities in relation to Barbados:

• From Grassroots to the Airwaves – Paying for Political Parties and Campaigns in the Caribbean, a study assessing not only the normative framework of political party and campaign financing, but also how legislation is actually put into practice.
• Democracy Building and Conflict Management programme seeking to support reconciliation processes and democratic constitution building frameworks through projects on Constitution Building, Sustainable Reconciliation, Democratic Development, Democracy, Conflict and Human Security.

Former IDEA Board member: Sir Henry de Boulay Forde, Lawyer and former Foreign Minister and Attorney-General of Barbados.
